ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Johannes Franciscus Spohler was a Dutch landscape painter, son of the well-known landscape artist Jan Jacob Spohler and a brother to Jan Jacob Coenraad Spohler who was also an artist.

His teacher and main influence was the accomplished painter Cornelis Springer (1817-1891).

Working within the Dutch Romantic tradition, Spohler’s images on mahogany panel demonstrate fine draughtsmanship, and a focus on topographical accuracy. His use of light gives his paintings a jewel-like quality, and they are still much sought-after today.
